About the Club:
The Cork Vikings, was founded in 2017 by a group of University College Cork graduates with a shared passion for Australian Rules Football, came together with the goal of continuing to play and competing in the Irish Women’s Super 7’s League and the Irish Premiership. Before the pandemic in 2020, the Cork Vikings were steadily gaining momentum, building a vibrant community and establishing themselves as a competitive force. However, like many sporting organisations, their progress was temporarily paused due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The Cork Vikings, returned in 2021, and since then have rapidly become a force to be reckoned with in AFLW in Ireland and Europe. Following their return post pandemic their numbers were so few at trainings that they had to train alongside their brother club, the Leeside Lions, whose support during that first year was invaluable.
Since then, the club has grown from strength to strength each year, reflecting the increasing interest in Australian Rules Football among women in Cork and Munster. Despite being a relatively young club, the Vikings have already achieved remarkable success, clinching four consecutive AFL Ireland Premierships and earning the prestigious title of AFL Europe Champions for three years in a row!
The Vikings’ incredible journey is a testament to the hard work and dedication behind the scenes of our committee, whose efforts to promote and develop the club have been instrumental in its success. Their passion for developing and growing the club has been pivotal in creating a strong, united community of footy and friendships!
