About the Club:
The University of Limerick Aussie Rules team was founded in 2025 by a group of passionate players already active in the AFL Ireland Premiership. The club hit the ground running, with weekly training sessions drawing impressive numbers from the start. They were also thrilled to welcome final-year UL student and AFLW North Melbourne star Erika O’Shea, who led a training session and helped inspire the next wave of talent at the university.
The 2025/26 season marked an important milestone for the UL Wolves with the introduction of the Munster Universities League, providing a major boost to the club as they prepared for their first taste of competitive action. Anticipation had been building throughout the campus, and the new competition offered the perfect platform for the Wolves to begin their journey.
UL’s first outing came in round two, hosting UCC in what proved to be a historic night for the club. The women’s team took to the field with 21 players and the men’s team with 19, with every single player making their AFL debut. While the experience and composure of the UCC sides ultimately proved decisive on the scoreboard, the occasion itself represented a huge step forward and a valuable learning experience for the Wolves.
Round three saw the UL Wolves travel to Cork for their first away fixture against MTU. The women’s match was a tightly contested affair, with UL leading at various stages and showing significant progress from their opening game. However, MTU dug deep in the closing stages to secure the win. The men’s game proved more challenging, as MTU, the reigning Fitz champions, demonstrated their experience and quality to claim a convincing victory.
Despite the results, the opening rounds of the Munster Universities League provided invaluable match experience for the UL Wolves. With every game, the club continues to build confidence, depth, and understanding, laying strong foundations for future seasons
