Leeside League 2021 – Teams, Venues and Dates Announced

This year, Cork’s AFL league is expanding beyond county borders, and we are delighted to welcome the newly formed Kerry Suns AFL to The Leeside League!

Our Men’s league now consists of 4 teams – Bombers, Lions, Saints & Suns. These games will be played in a 9-a-side format, on rugby pitches.

Played out over 3 league rounds, each team will play each other, aiming to wrestle The Leeside League Cup from the first ever winners, The Leeside Lions .

Ahead of this year’s tournament, newly appointed Irish Warriors Head coach, Eoin O’Sullivan, gave his thoughts on The Leeside League:

“I’m looking forward to the Leeside League and to seeing players getting back to competitive games, particularly in the format of our next competition – The Euro Cup in October. Regional competitions and games – part of AFL Ireland’s Return to Play Plan, afford a great opportunity to track players’ progress before the return of the AFL Ireland Premiership.”

Also, as announced previously, there is now a Women’s section where the Vikings & Crusaders will play a 3-game series to see who will take out The Leeside League Women’s trophy. Another huge boost for AFL in Cork!

Caroline Condon from the Cork Vikings was also keen to highlight the excitement within the Vikings camp ahead of the inaugural Women’s competition:

“Cork vikings are very excited to be involved in this years Leeside League. It’ll be a great way to start our season and get our new players involved. We are very keen to get back to footy after such a long break and take on UCC Crusaders.”
